May is mostly a modern medley here at Popular Patchwork. We start out our mammoth project pile this month with Transparency by Kerry Foster, which shows how you can cleverly combine colours to create an interesting effect. If you need to transport or store your sewing machine and you like the custom look, why not try our Sewing Machine Bag by Debbie Shore, an adapted extract from her latest book, Sew Useful. It’s always lovely to make something useful from your scraps, so why not try paper piecing Angela Garrett’s shabby chic Scrappy Hexi Coasters; even the tiniest of scraps is useful in this one. Mandy Munroe uses EZ templates and fun fabrics to make this month’s striking cover star, Petal Cushions and if you’re a cat lover or just like pretty pastel fabrics, then Lynne ldsworthy’s Cats, for Makower UK, might be just the project for you; it’s a modern masterpiece of squares. If you’ve something a bit more otherworldly in mind, Sarah Williamson captures time and space with Time Travelling, a fabulous Whovian lap quilt. Lin Clements makes the season shine with a bright and cheerful Spring Flowers Wall Hanging. Crazy quilting has been around for hundreds of years, but in an adapted extract from Cultural Fusion Quilts, Sujata Shah manages to make her Crazy Quilt contemporary by using bold and vivid colours. If you’ve been following Regan Purcell’s Folded Flowers Sampler, then this issue completes the project with part three: Whirligig flower, double and single hexagon flowers, small flowers, quilting and binding.
