MOON LETTERS
This Dark Earth
MOONLETTERS.BANDCAMP.COM
Difficult third album from maximalist US proggers.
On the face of it, Moon Letters’ third LP has all the ingredients of classic prog, not least because this Seattle-based quintet offer breathing space for all kinds of comfortingly familiar sonic tropes. There are paroxysms of a jazz-rock guitar tag-team with noodly synth patterns and bubbling bass lines on Energy Of The Heart, as they take turns at centre-stage with Yes-style harmonies and flurries of metallic guitar riffs; In The Catacombs shoehorns in jerky shards of math rock and gnarly chunks of post-hardcore; and Island Of Magic Mirrors jumbles time signatures at sixes and sevens like Zappa soundtracking a circus.
