Sellafield’s decommissioning programme will require a pipeline of skills into the 2120s
Sellafield’s mission is one of the longest work programmes anywhere in the world. The six square kilometre nuclear site in west Cumbria has a decommissioning programme that will last well into the 2120s. To put that into context: the grandparents of the people who will complete the job haven’t been born yet. Thinking this far into the future is usually the domain of science fiction writers.
So how does the industry ensure it has the right skills in place at every stage? It’s an issue that the site’s operator Sellafield Ltd, and its owner the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), have long grappled with.
