WITH effect from March 22, operation of Sheffield Supertram services transferred from Stagecoach to South Yorkshire Future Trams Ltd, a company established and wholly-owned by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).
Although infrastructure remained in public hands, the tram services had been franchised to Stagecoach since 1997 as local authorities attempted to recoup money borrowed to help finance the construction of the system, the initial phases of which opened during 1994 and 1995.
A business plan for the new company, including investment in the renewal of infrastructure and replacement of trams, was approved by members of the SYMCA Board in January.
