FROM the December timetable change, Czech private operator Leo Express (which is 50% owned by Spanish national operator RENFE) took over operation of regional services on the 97km line between Bratislava and Komárno.
The nine-year contract is being operated with a fleet of 21 refurbished ex-German Alstom LINT DMUs leased from Alpha Trains. The new Leo Express service has replaced an unusual joint operation by Slovak national operator ZSSK along with its Austrian equivalent ÖBB, which had resulted in Austrian Class 2016 diesel locos working domestic Slovak services alongside ZSSK locos and DMUs.
The Austrian Class 2016 locos are currently diagrammed to work all Vienna-Bratislava services using the currently nonelectrified Marchegg-Devínska Nová Ves route and this was how the Austrian locos and push-pull sets got to Slovakia for the Komárno service.
