STORY BY BOB JONES
If you read my May 2019 On the Rocks column, you know I headed to Maine to participate in and report on the seventhannual New England Mineral Conference and enjoy a visit to the nearby Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, which is currently under construction. We ended the Maine trip witha little rock hunting at gem pegmatite mines.
The last time I was in Maine, I was at a pegmatite mine at Mount Mica shooting scenes for the video “Gemstones of America”. That earlier trip was fantastic, as it reminded me so much of Maine’s early gem history. It also triggered the writing of this two-part article about Maine’s gems. In this, part one of two, I’m discussing the filming of the video we did, while the second part will focus on Maine’s current and very exciting mineral activities.
