Scottish Islands Explorer  |  Jan-Feb 2019
The January / February 2019 edition endeavours to start the New Year in style. That insular part of the Mainland, Scoraig, on the shores of Little Loch Broom, has a compelling recent history, while Raasay, also featured on the front cover, has its iron-mining industry revealed. Now just beyond living memory, the attitudes of the ministers of religion on St Kilda are brought into focus.
The second presentation in the new Back from Beyond series looks a little beyond the Butt of Lewis to Luchruban. It’s little visited by tourists despite being a short distance from a well-frequented destination. In the same way, the monastery at Papa Stronsay is only a short distance from Whitehall, Stronsay. On the other hand, St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, is one of Orkney’s more visited venues.
Texa and Ardnave Point, Islay, are not particularly well-known, but explored in this issue. Relatively few people, beyond Mountain Bothies Association members, reach Tomslèibhe, Mull, which also receives attention. Island Deer are always worth seeing as are the photographs of Margaret Fay Shaw from a new book, Eilean. When tired of visualising, consider solving the Crossword.
