Frederick Courteney Selous, born 31 December 1851, was educated at Rugby under old Wilson. Young Fred was not a run of the mill pupil; he had a hidden firearm in his dorm and would often spend the nights out in the woods. Selous had been inspired by Baldwin’s book, African Hunting from Natal to the Zambezi, and had answered his Headmaster’s reprimands for sleeping in the woods and on the dorm floor with, “Well you see Sir, one day I am going to be a hunter in Africa and I am just hardening myself to sleeping on the ground.”
