MACRO MAGIC

If you’re ready for your close-up, one of the cheapest full-frame cameras out there is also a macro marvel once you partner it up with the right lens

CANON EOS RP

£1399 (body only) / stuff.tv/EOSRP

T he EOS RP is the newest mirrorless smasher in Canon’s EOS R line, and one of the cheapest ways to crack your way into full-frame shooting.

And if homing in on life’s smaller details is what you’re focused on, you’ll be stoked with what it offers.

For a start, it’s really diddy for a full-frame shooter, so there’s no bother using it on the fly. Flip out that LCD and you’ll be able to place it in the strangest of places for unorthodox angles – and with a super-responsive touch panel, you just need to tap the subject for the Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system to work its magic.

That focusing tech boasts 4779 AF points spread right across the frame, while the Spot AF option means you can be as precise as you need to be; but for utmost control you might want to hit up manual focus. Now you can unleash focus peaking, which graces your subjects with a coloured highlight as soon as contrast and sharpness are bang on. You can even flip between red, yellow, or blue to contrast better against whatever it is you’re shooting.

Fancy using the electronic viewfinder instead of the LCD? Tap the AF button and it’ll magnify by 5x or even 10x into the frame.

Jpg images sing with colour, but you can take things into your own hands and go RAW if you want to polish things up later on. And don’t let the small range of native lenses put you off: use one of Canon’s fine DSLR macro lenses through the included adapter, with the same AF and metering you’d enjoy with a DSLR.
