Welcome
It’s been a strange kind of year. We’ve spent half of it either indoors or in very restricted circumstances. And while the summer brought us strange challenges as everything shut down, including the board games industry, it also bought us a little time to reflect on the hobby.
The Best Games of 2020 then sees a stranger mix of games than 2019. Party games and four or more player games are mostly absent as they were impossible to review for a great deal of the year, whereas solo games took a step into the limelight, as did gateway family games with hobbyists attempting to recruit their nearest and dearest to the gaming table.
2020 was also a good year for roleplaying games, with remote play of games through video chat becoming a staple. We saw some big releases with the first Critical Role source book – The Explorer’s Guide To Wildemount, MÖRK BORG and Alien: The Roleplaying Game.
Looking at the titles in this magazine, you’ll soon realise publishers everywhere were ready to celebrate their best games with deluxe rereleases, tweaked second or third printings, and lavish collectors editions. It was still a celebration, but at a distance. For gaming, 2020 was still a success – but here’s to next year, when we’ll be together again to remember it.
