COMMON sense would have told the Welsh Rugby Union that banning a song like “Delilah” is doomed. It can ban its performance at the Principality Stadium by choirs, but the song, made famous by Tom Jones, will
almost certainly be belted out by fans. It is a song about betrayal and murder between lovers, as are half the arias in opera. So, are we going to close the door on opera, banning it for fear that it encourages misogyny? Are we going to ban Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” for the same reason?
Or do we let them stand without being censored because they are the stuff of tragedy acted out on stage, or in a song, and are about the human condition at its extremes. What’s more, the vast majority of us know the distinction between those extremes and our everyday lives without any help from the WRU’s ‘thought police’.
