JEEP COMPASS S 4XE PHEV
£40,895
FOR PHEV is the economical option in the range
AGAINST Interior is a bit of a mish-mash, so-so powertrain
A plug-in hybrid powertrain should be the ideal thing for a large thirsty SUV these days, shouldn’t it? This one works on paper, less so in real life. A wheezy petrol engine is coupled with an underpowered e-motor, so you can’t rely on either in isolation, but they make a decent team, even if in practice you get a lot less than the claimed 30 miles of range. Strangely for a company of Jeep’s pedigree the PHEV is the only 4WD option in the range. SB
