Nestled high in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains, the high-end Limalimo Lodge is now open for business. Limalimo was financed in part by AWF’s impact investment subsidiary, which provides financing to enterprises that have the potential to positively impact both an area’s conservation and its economy. By adhering to conservation covenants set by AWF, the lodge prioritises environmental sustainability in its operations and provides employment opportunities for local communities. In addition, a portion of its revenues support the Adisge Primary School, a school recently rebuilt and supported by AWF’s Classroom Africa programme.
Despite political unrest in Ethiopia last year, the lodge enjoyed healthy bookings from December through February, the peak time for tourism there. With such beautiful views of the landscape, it’s not hard to see why demand for rooms is high. Read media coverage of AWF’s work in Ethiopia: www.awf.org/EthiopiaTourism
