I’ve loved the architecture, design, construction and home building industries since I was a young boy. My grandfather, who was a builder and tough northern grafter, inspired me. That is why my heart aches when I see the state that the UK house building industry has managed to get itself in. It is failing at a staggering rate. Homes are massively overpriced. Even ‘affordable homes’ aren’t actually affordable at all. We aren’t building enough homes to meet the demand. Supply and demand are miles apart pushing up prices. It’s actually worse than that because the fact is, where we can build lots of homes where land is relatively cheap, there either aren’t enough jobs in the area or incomes are so low people can’t afford to buy anyway. Banks are making it so much harder for us to get a mortgage too.
