While boasting to friends about the recent success of this year’s Autocar Awards, I was brought up short by one wiseacre suggesting anew category for 2025: the Turning In The Grave Award. Contenders, he reckons, are Colin Chapman (who could never have imagined a 2.5-tonne Lotus), Sir William Lyons (whose company is busy ditching 80 years of traditional buyers), Henry Ford (whose UK division couldn’t currently sell him a replacement for its 30-year market-topper) and Peter Wheeler (whose exuberant TVR is a fading memory).
