There are many ways to measure an engine’s effectiveness. Economy and performance are obvious, but we’re focusing on versatility. This can be defined as suitability across a variety of cars, perhaps produced over a long period, and in some cases its use in machines that are not cars at all. Engines that are dissimilar in almost every other way can be equally versatile.
