Plastic-free infancy
It’s never too early to preserve our planet
We begin burning through plastic from an incredibly young age – in fact, it starts when we’re only a matter of hours old. From the bottles we feed from, to the nappies we go to the toilet in, plastic is there for us from day one – so is it really any wonder that we’ve become so dependent on it? Welcoming a new life into the world is a fun and exciting time, but if you don’t want your baby’s waste to add to the ever-growing mound of plastic that pollutes our planet, you may want to look for alternatives.
A typical newborn uses between five and 10 nappies every day, each of which takes over 450 years to fully decompose (4ocean.com). That means that while you’re reading this, the nappies you used as a baby still exist in landfill. But luckily, nappies are one of the easiest things to replace with eco-alternatives – it was only a few decades ago that we used to love a good old cloth nappy. Not only are fabric versions cheaper to buy than plastic disposables, they can be lined with washable, reusable liners which reduce mess and increase absorbency – they’re also biodegradable and can be quickly cleaned in a single-cycle wash.
