Unique blend
Keen to use a traditional structural system for the build, Chris and Di opted for a conventional cavity wall setup. The bricks chosen for the front of the house were Ibstock’s Olde English blend. They were selected for their ability to harmonise with the surrounding period properties. “That finish wasn’t going to be a stark contrast from the homes that were already there,” says Chris. “We wanted our house to complement the setting, while having the more contemporary statement with the timber cladding and render to the back of the property.” One slight hiccup occurred when Chris and Di weren’t keen on any of the blends the builder had tendered for. “We spent quite a bit of time choosing new bricks we liked, which did mean a price increase. But it was worth it in the end,” says Chris.
