Two physicists just snagged $3 million (£2.16 million) for developing a super-precise clock that could allow scientists to study and explore the universe like never before. Hidetoshi Yatori and Jun Ye won the 2022 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics “for outstanding contributions to the invention and development of the optical lattice clock, which enables precision tests of the fundamental laws of nature”.
Yatori is based at the University of Tokyo and Japan’s Riken research institute, and Ye calls the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology home. The duo worked independently and will share the award.
