On May 19, not for the first time, Van Ham in Cologne is selling a painting by Raden Saleh Ben Jaggia (1811-80), a Javanese prince who made a career for himself during the 22 years he spent in Europe, mainly in The Netherlands and Germany.
His speciality was portrayals of dramatic events in exotic surroundings, which were highly sought after by members of the European aristocracy and also found favour with English royalty. Works by Raden Saleh can be found in Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
