An auction of coins, tokens and banknotes at Tennants on February 7 in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, includes this well-preserved Elizabethan gold half-pound coin.
Minted in London in 1560-61 (as denoted by the presence of a ‘Cross Crosslet’ mint mark), the coin was equivalent to 10 shillings or a third of a sovereign. It is estimated at £4000-5000.
