Offered for £18,000, a pair of Chelsea baluster shaped vases were one of the highlight sales at Albert Amor’s show of Chelsea Gold Anchor period work from a private collection. Produced c.1768, the 10in (25.5cm) high vases are of the same form to another in the Victoria and Albert Museum and have a provenance to the Barry Byrne collection of Sydney, Australia.
The selling exhibition that concluded at Albert Amor in St James’s on March 21 included Gold Anchor wares from what is probably the largest collection in private hands. Titled Shape and Colour, the catalogue showcased the ambitious modelling and the rich ground colours and gilding that define this era of production (1756-69). It was third in a series of four selling exhibitions that is reintroducing many of the merits of this sometimes neglected period. The final show in the series will take place in June with the catalogue available in late May.
