The stopwatch used by English referee Jack Taylor in the 1974 World Cup final sold for a within-estimate £3300 at Fellows (23/15% buyer’s premium) in Birmingham.
It was used by Taylor to time the fastest goal ever scored in a World Cup final – the penalty by Johan Neeskens in the second minute. It was also the first-ever penalty awarded in a World Cup final.
Three separate internet bidders competed at the June 14 Luxury Watch Sale for the lot. The stopwatch was consigned by Taylor’s family.
