UN RAVELLING THIS MORTAL COIL

A WITTY AND ENGAGING TALE OF A NURSE WHO HELPS PATIENTS TO DIE — WHILE HIS LIFE GETS MORE AND MORE COMPLICATED

THE EASY WAY OUT

Steven Amsterdam/riverrun

→ Set in an imagined nearfuture, The Easy Way Out is a sharp, often hilarious and strangely life-affirming book about assisted suicide. Evan’s job is to help people die. He’s a nurse — a suicide assistant. What he does is legal — just. He’s the one in the hospital who hands out the last drink of deadly Nembutal to those who ask for it. The idea is to help the person end their life, dispassionately and discreetly. Evan is relatively new in the job; the woman who did it before him quit suddenly and they needed to fill the vacancy. His boss, Nettie, has her eye on him, uncertain if he is really the right sort of person for the role. The idea is not to get too emotionally involved. But that’s not easy because helping someone die is about as personal as it gets. And it’s not just Evan’s professional life that’s complicated. He’s been seeing this hot couple for a while now, but they don’t know what he does for a living. And then there is his fiercely independent, poker-playing mother, Viv, who has gone AWOL from the retirement home she lives in. As her health fluctuates could she be about to turn to Evan and ask for his help when the time comes? The Easy Way Out is a wry, brilliantly funny, incredibly moving book about dying as we choose and living purposefully.
