“Every year my mom made several variations of ‘turtle bars’ around the holidays—recipes found in our ancient church cookbook that often turned out to be either a basic seven-layer bar (with a graham cracker crust, shredded coconut, and chocolate) or bars made with layers of pretzels, caramel candies, and pecans. They were family favourites, regardless of the combination. I decided to come up with my own variation; my family still asks for them each year. I still call them Turtle Bars, in honour of my mom, and because they still hit all the right chocolate-caramel-pecan notes” Sarah Kieffer, author
