Classic Van & Pick-up  |  Classic Van July 2013
AMAZINGLY (or, maybe, boringly), it’s
been nearly a decade since I took over
as editor of Elastic Band and Stickup.
Where have all those years gone? That
is a stupid question asked by stupid people
because, quite obviously, they have passed by,
as has happened since time began. Back in the
early days, light commercials didn’t have too
much recognition in the classic movement and
the geezers with Ferraris, Bentleys, Bugattis
and all of the other so-called exotica were
almost scornful of Minor vans, Minivans and
other everyday workhorses. It’s all changing,
of course, because the commercials are now
starting to fetch loony money (something
which I don’t actually like, on the basis that
they are being priced beyond the average
enthusiast).
The status of LCVs has grown to the extent that
it’s now just about certain that there will be a show
exclusively for classic light commercials staged at Gaydon
next year (see the report on page eight).
To me, that is pretty exciting news because it means
that for the first time in history, classic vans and pickups
will have their own major event. I’ll be having a bit
of a hand in helping get it together – and when I say a bit,
I mean a bit, I am no major player, believe me – and feel kind of privileged to have been involved
in the scene for a fair few years and seen the interest
in light commercials gradually grow. Like I said, I’m not
that enthralled about prices going nuts, but it is truly
gratifying to witness our humble old clunkers earning
the recognition they deserve. Anyway, we’ll keep you
informed. A reminder that the October issue is to be a sixties
special, so if you’ve got any old photos, stories to tell
or anything else related to that decade that is vaguely
vehicle orientated, please get in touch. I’ve had 2,000
letters already, but could do with a few more (and,
maybe, a few lessons in telling the truth).
