When I was at school, there was a brief but frenzied craze for clackers. As you may recall, this toy consisted of two heavy plastic balls connected by a string, which made a ‘clacking’ sound when swung around and banged together. The teachers regarded clackers as a dangerous menace, and banned them before they took someone’s eye out.
