DANIELLE MUSTARDE SPEAKS TO LGBT HISTORY MONTH FOUNDER AND CHAIR SUE SANDERS

LGBT HISTORY MONTH

PHOTOS NIC CHINARDET

The ultimate aim of LGBT History Month? To make LGBT people visible. Sue Sanders first helped found education charity Schools OUT in 1974 before pioneering LGBT History Month (LGBTHM) 30 years later in 2004. “Many schools and organisations now wouldn’t dream of letting February pass without celebrating LGBT History Month, which is very exciting”, Sue beams. “The 50 year anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales really helped to push people’s awareness during 2017, though it has to be said, the coverage was very white and very male. Through LGBTHM, we want to make sure that lesbians, bi and trans people, people of colour, people with disabilities and people of different beliefs are also represented.”
