Sadie Sinner The Songbird’s Instagram grid is full of gorgeous photos of herself and others with glowing dark skin and bright wide smiles. The captions include affirming messages about nurturing joy and self. As well as spreading joy online, she cultivates Black queer joy in her art. She curated The Cocoa Butter Club when she saw that in 2015, Pride in London didn’t book any Black lesbians on the cabaret stage. Taking matters into her own hands, she started building connections and bridges, and so the collective was born with the aim to “decolonise and moisturise”. Sadie has an instantly calming aura, even through our Zoom call. She also has some brilliant advice about finding and nurturing some much-needed Black queer joy.
Want to see The Cocoa Butter Club this year? Their shows will be recommencing at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern and there are plans to teach performance classes too! Discounted rates are available for dark-skinned people “because we need more representation and highlighting”. Find out more at linktr.ee/thecocoabutterclub
