HOW SHOULD LESBIAN AND BI WOMEN VOTE IN THE EUROPEAN REFERENDUM?

he debate around Britain’s impending EU referendum has become increasingly fraught, with interventions by everyone from American President Barack Obama urging us to stay IN, to cricket legend Ian Botham batting for OUT. (Yes, it has also been a rather male dominated debate.)

Many of the arguments put forward by both sides of the campaign revolve around economics and business, but there are other elements, some of which specifically affect LGBT voters, that are worth considering as you try and decide whether to vote “Leave” or “Remain” on 23 June.

It is fair to say that rights for women and LGBT people have always been very much on the agenda for the EU’s institutions. For example, the founding document of the EU in its current form contains rules against sex discrimination in the workplace.

The European Parliament also has a large Intergroup on LGBT rights, which recently criticised non-members Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania for their poor record on LGBT equality. These criticisms have clout too, as the countries named will have to improve their LGBT rights record as they all aim to enter the EU at some stage in the future.
