Peter Miles, who played Davros’ evil henchman Nyder in the 1975 classic Genesis of the Daleks, died in February. You’ve sent us your memories and tributes to the actor…

Peter Miles Remembered

It’s so sad to hear that the magnificent Peter Miles has passed away. In my opinion Nyder, alongside Davros (played by Michael Wisher) made Genesis of the Daleks the amazing story that it is. Of course, Peter also played the hateable Dr Lawrence in 1970’s Doctor Who and the Silurians and Professor Whitaker in 1974’s Invasion of the Dinosaurs. He was a fantastic actor.

Peter Miles’ distinctive voice has been a part of my world for over 30 years, since first nigh-on wearing out the audiocassette release of Genesis of the Daleks, before finally getting to watch the video at 16. Whether he be Nyder, Professor Whitaker, Dr Lawrence, or one of many characters from BBC Radio, BBV, Magic Bullet, or Big Finish’s contributions to the many worlds of Doctor Who, his performance was always a highlight of any production.

I had the pleasure of working with Peter Miles on a number of occasions, both on stage and on audio. On one of those occasions he was playing Nyder, a part which he loved and was immensely proud of. Nyder was a testament to Peter’s skill as an actor, for I cannot think of two characters that were so far apart. As a person Peter was a gentle, kind man. He was almost shy and reserved until he got to know you and then he was always ready with an amusing story. He spoke fondly of Doctor Who. He loved doing audio dramas and readings, and enjoyed meeting fans at conventions. He will be missed.
