Amid the marketing maelstrom of December’s Game Awards, the Season announcement trailer was a halcyon moment. That twinkling Studio Ghibli piano. The wide-open watercolour sky, clouds sketched in with visible brushstrokes. Sketchbooks and tape recorders and the shifting focus of a camera viewfinder as it’s trained on a twitching lemur.
It’s a bewitching minute, dense with images that demand careful study and, ideally, framing on a wall. But the game itself remains enigmatic, by design. For its prior game, Darwin Project, Scavengers Studio threw the doors of its Montréal studio wide open, with a two-year early access period that saw it change tack multiple times in the face of the dwindling player numbers. For this one, the team is understandably keeping its cards much closer to the chest.
