For all its faults, The Surge, Deck 13’s science-fiction riff on the Soulslike, at least felt like an attempt to push FromSoftware’s formula in a new direction. Arriving sooner than expected, the studio’s latest action RPG retreats to the world of fantasy, but avoids the grimdark aesthetic of its peers, housing its creatively conceived menagerie in a brighter setting. Indeed, with its sun-blasted environments and focus on speedy traversal between battles – sand-surfing between encounters is slightly redolent of Journey, but with aggressive rather than altruistic purpose – it looks like (another) one in the eye for poor old Forspoken.
