In his Historia Brittonum, 9th-century AD monk Nennius referred to The City of the Legion - believed to be Caerleon - to be the site of one of legendary King Arthur’s battles. Before the ruins were excavated, later visitors came to believe that the amphitheatre was his famous Round Table.
