My 1950s house is finally true to its roots

When Cathy Locke took on her husband’s family home, she used her passion for kitsch to embrace the era in which the property was built
‘The living room holds my two most precious possessions – my sideboard and our jukebox. The jukebox was bought for us by my parents as a wedding gift and I found the sideboard discarded in someone’s garden. I upcycled it using vintage and Alice Apple wallpaper samples, and teak-oiled the wood to give it new life’

Welcome to my home

A bit about me

I’m Cathy Locke and I live with my husband, Kieran, three year old daughter, Rosina, and our cat, Stanley.

Where I live

About Homestyle

The long awaited arrival of the summer sun means this month we’re focusing on extending our living space outdoors. If you don’t have acres to play with, fear not, as we’ve mustered plenty of simple and cost-effective ways for gardening in a small space on page 72. If the idea of stepping into the fresh air appeals, while making a quid or two at the same time, Abbi gives us the low down on trading your wares in her boot sale boot camp. For those after some real home inspo on a shoestring, you’re in luck! Erin Hayhow showcases her own art for a truly creative space (p.14), Cathy Locke proves once and for all that kitsch really is cool (p.50), Laura Goble makes a heavenly find by fixing up a church pew (p.38), and Sooz Gordon demonstrates that dark walls are gorgeous, not gloomy (p.26) – navy is the new magnolia, FYI. Feel like your home is beyond salvation? Close down the Rightmove app until you’ve read our six-page special on low cost revamps and straightforward renovations over on page 60. You may just learn to fall back in love with your home. After all that, you’ll probably be feeling a little peckish, which is why we have a fiesta of Mediterranean recipes for you (p.88), plus mid-week dinners for rumbling tummies who just can’t wait (p86). Enjoy, HomeStylers!
