Get Fit with Apple

How to use your Apple gear to improve your fitness, your diet and your wellbeing

There has never been a better time to get fitter. From putting on extra weight during lockdown to the impact on our mental wellbeing, COVID-19 has affected everyone in some way, so why not start supercharging yourself in 2021 so that you’ll be fighting fit when we come out of the other side of the pandemic?

No matter what your fitness aims are, you likely already have the tools you need to succeed. Whether you own a Mac, an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch, you can track the crucial stats that will help you understand how well you are progressing and it gets even easier if you own multiple Apple devices, especially with Apple’s new Fitness+ service.

Apple Fitness+ brings studio-style workouts (for all abilities) to your iPhone, iPad and Apple TV that cleverly incorporate the workout metrics from your Apple Watch, so you can check your stats without having to avert your eyes from the video. With ten different workout types across a range of durations, including High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Strength, Yoga, Dance, Core and more, plus accompanying motivational music, Apple Fitness+ is the perfect programme to keep you lean and sharp of mind.

In this feature we’ll help you get started with Apple Fitness+ and outline other apps and services that can aid you in your mission become a leaner, fitter and healthier you.

Apple Fitness+ Workouts

There is no doubt that Apple has spent time honing the Fitness+ offering so that a professional and fun experience is available to you every time you want to burn some calories. It is genuinely surprising how good it is from the first few seconds you use it and you will find the exercise time passing by very quickly. Here with help you familiarise yourself with the interface.

A complete connection

When you start a workout in Fitness+ your Apple Watch will spring to life. It is unusual in that these are the only type of workouts that you can start from a device other than the Watch, but the Watch works perfectly with an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV. The data actually goes both ways as well, which is clever.

1 Choose a workout

Scroll though the categories at the top and then select the type of workout or equipment you want to use. An appropriate playlist will play in the background.

2 The connection opens

Your Apple Watch will vibrate and it will follow your iPhone or iPad perfectly. Crucially, your workout data will be displayed on the other device in real time.

3 Even better integration

The workouts display in your Fitness app as normal, but they include graphics and add an interesting visual tweak. The Fitness+ integration is close to perfect throughout.
