A mentor of mine in the early days of my writing career advised that it was wise to occasionally ingratiate oneself with the person or persons paying for your efforts. Whilst this was in the days when I was writing advertising copy, largely aimed at persuading people to buy things they didn’t need with money that they quite possibly didn’t have, old habits die hard.
To that end I offer my undying gratitude to Allan Bryce, editor and publisher of this parish, for his inspiration in putting together at least part of this article.
Allow me to explain. Over the years I have been in the enviable position of being invited to write reviews of model kits covering various subjects. That entailed actually building and painting the things as opposed to some on-line reviews which seem to consist of opening the box and examining the contents whilst making enthusiastic cooing noises. The incentives for producing the reviews that I was involved with were the money, the realisation that it was more fun than having a proper job and the fact that I got to keep the finished model
