There is no doubt that seed sown direct in the ground often results in stronger, sturdier plants that go on to crop well. However, if you only have a small plot where every plant counts, it can often make sense to start seeds in containers first.This gives them a better chance of survival and, where necessary, allows the use of a warm propagator to get them to germinate.
