One of the first computer-designed album covers, the sleeve of Talking Heads’ Afro-funk infused 1980 album was conceived by Tina WeymouThand Chris Frantz wiThhelp from Walter Bender at the Massachusetts Institute Of Technology. It was a torturous process due to the limitations of early computers, wiThBender applying red masks over the faces of the four band members. The design was originally intended to be used on the back cover, wiTha similarly masked image of fighter planes flying in formation on the front, but the two were switched. The album’s original title, Melody Attack, was also changed, wiThDavid Byrne saying: “The music had something to say that at the time seemed new, transcendent, and maybe even revolutionary, at least for funk-rock songs”. Designer Tibor Kalman used a simple sans serif font for the band’s name on the cover, inverting the As.
