Office for National Statistics figures show that in the ten years between 2008 and 2018 there were 1,330 students who died by completing suicide.
Students are a high-risk group of people, who often experience social isolation, homesickness, financial worries, stress and emotional strains. Yet people don’t often talk about suicide or acknowledge how large the problem is.
As well as the stress of student life, those studying mental health nursing are also exposed to further stressors such as placement, having to work part-time jobs to afford the course itself and being exposed to situations in their placements whereby they are aiding patients with suicidal ideations.
