”Have you noticed how we only win the World Cup under a Labour government?” A cheeky quip from Harold Wilson, prime minister at the time of England’s one and only great international footballing win. But glance at the five flights of English football, with each club colour-coded by the party controlling the constituency of its ground, and you might think Wilson was on to something. Because while the Premier League is three-quarters red, every time you step down a league there is more and more blue, until the less than fully-professional National League is over 70 per cent blue.
