IN THIS TRANSFIXING FILM, Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) plunges us into the mind of Shirley Jackson, one of the greatest American horror and mystery writers of the 20th century. Director Josephine Decker takes an imaginative and eerie approach to the literary biopic, playing fast and loose with Jackson’s biographical details to get to the uncanny and rebellious heart of her art.
We meet Jackson on the brink of writing her masterpiece when the arrival of newlyweds Rose and Fred (Odessa Young and Logan Lerman) upends her meticulous routine and heightens tensions in her already tempestuous relationship with her husband, Stanley Hyman (Michael Stuhlbarg). Shirley and Rose develop a relationship that blurs boundaries and allows both to challenge the stuffy patriarchal atmosphere of 1950s America - as well as working together to help Jackson uncover important truths and complete her work. A curious watch.
