Further carbon-saving bridges designed
WITH work on the project’s first double composite viaduct at Wendover Dean in Buckinghamshire already under way, HS2 Ltd has announced that designers and engineers have also succeeded in reducing the carbon footprint of four other major bridges by adopting the same construction technique.
Production of steel and concrete is carbon intensive, but by using steel beams sandwiched between layers of concrete rather than traditional methods, it is possible to create a structure which maximises strength while using significantly less of both materials.
