Can you remember watching hit 80’s show ‘Through the Keyhole’ and marvelling at the unique drawl of Lloyd Grossman as he asked viewers ‘Who lives in a house like this?’ The show’s been revived recently, with Keith Lemon presenting. The premise remains the same – we have a nose around celebrity homes, clues are left and we have to guess who lives there.
It’s fun, and often surprises. Someone we thought we knew has a home reflecting a completely different side to them.
And isn’t that the beauty of letting loose in our houses, perhaps unearthing our more creative side? In this issue’s cover feature, Kathy Douglas has made a warm, slightly ramshackle home filled with vintage and reclaimed pieces. Everything flows, not necessarily because it all matches, but because everything is chosen with love. By contrast, Daphne Dunn’s home is very polished, yet has unexpected touches and real flair. Again, she’s been true to herself, and broken a few ‘rules.’ Nuala Hewer has completely renovated her charming ‘Kitty’ the vintage caravan which turns heads at every campsite she visits. And, contrasting again, we look at the increasing popularity of eco garden rooms the epitome of modern design, but with a green, reclaimed ethos. What stands out is that it doesn’t really matter whether you live in a cosy cottage or townhouse; or find extra space in an old caravan or sleek outbuilding, the point is that you make your own mark.
We hope that this issue will inspire you to create a home – mansion, flat or bungalow – that reflects what you love. And everyone will know that only you could live in a house like it.
