The GREAT MUNICH Gem and Mineral Show

A Bucket List ‘Must’

Every year in late October, mineral and gem collectors and dealers descend on the city of Munich, Germany, to participate in the largest such show in Europe. Located on what was the old Munich airport where we used to arrive, the show fills a cluster of large exhibit buildings, each devoted to an aspect of our science and hobby.

Fortunately, the show is organized, so an accurate accounting of attendance is gathered as everyone passes through turnstiles that keep count. The show organizers also record the amazing number of countries represented by visitors. The 2018 show was visited by people from 61 different nations. Imagine that! It is truly a worldwide event.

In my over 70 years of being involved with the hobby, I have gotten to know countless people from all over the world, and I think all of them were at the Munich show. Needless to say, I spent more time socializing with friends from other countries than seeking specimens. What is also amazing is the number of mineral and gem dealers set up selling fine minerals, excellent gems, and fine jewelry. There are nearly 1,300 dealers at the Munich show. The 50-odd shows in Tucson probably have an equal number of dealers, but at Munich they are all set up in several connected buildings. Christoph Keilmann, director of the Munich show, reported 856 mineral dealers set up and 442 dealers who specialize in gems and jewelry in 2018. With so many dealers, it’s likely thatthe more than 40,000 visitors will find some of what they seek.
