EMPIRICAL RESEARCH HAS CONSISTENTLY SHOWN ASTROLOGY to be without validity. Along the way it has been claimed that if people were educated in science a pseudoscience like astrology would cease to exist. But this argument misses the point. Education hasn’t worked because clients of astrologers see astrology as a source of meaning and spiritual benefit, not as a source of truth. It has survived because enough people find it personally meaningful (and enough other people find it lucrative) to give it a leading place in modern popular belief. In this article we explain how astrology is actually used, how it would apply to Hitler, the performance of astrologers when meta-analysed, legal views, astrology as a source of meaning, and astrology’s likely future.
