BAMBOO VIOLIN BOW
A new bamboo bow offers a sustainable, wooden alternative to pernambuco
FEATURED PRODUCT
Although bamboo bows date back to the 1960s, the construction method and commercial availability of the bamboo NuBow for violin is a first for the string industry. Its stick is made entirely of bamboo, a significantly more sustainable material than pernambuco: it is farmed in large quantities and doesn’t need to be harvested in its natural environment. ‘I was following all the issues around sustainability and thought that carbon fibre bows were a great idea,’ says Rodney Mohr, bow maker and developer of the NuBow. ‘But they still have a different sound from wooden bows and I was hoping to come up with something that sounded closer to a pernambuco bow.’
