It can be a tough as a horsey kid: Not only is riding expensive, but hardly anyone at school shares your undying love for horses. They think you’re strange because you canter around the playground. Most of the boys tease you. Your teachers believe you should spend more time on science and less time in the saddle. You feel pressured to consider something more “normal,” like soccer or softball. Doesn’t anyone want you to stick with riding?
Making it All Work
Don’t get discouraged! Jaclyn Landers didn’t. She began riding and showing when she was 8 years old. She’s now entering her final year at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Texas, and she still rides. In fact, she’s one of the top riders on SMU’s NCAA Division I equestrian team. During a recent visit to her horses BMQ Decked in Chrome (“Decker”), an AQHA gelding, and Sillhouette, a warmblood mare, she sat down with Young Rider to answer a few questions. See how she’s survived being a horse-crazy girl all these years.
