Stag wall-hanger pg 8

Make this stylish silhouette design to hold sweets and other mini gifts

You will need

✓ 1m linen ✓ pencil ✓ tape measure ✓ scissors ✓ A3 sheet of dark brown or black felt ✓ pins ✓ embroidery needle and thread ✓ scraps of pink, green, purple and yellow felt ✓ fabric glue ✓ sequins ✓ sewing machine ✓ fabric marker pen ✓ 1” thick wooden dowel ✓ twine

1 Cut two 50cm x 75cm pieces of linen fabric, and put one aside for later. The other will be used to create the decorated front of the wall-hanger. Download and print the Stag Advent template from www.yourhomemagazine.co.uk or send a stamped SAE to Your Home CME 2015 Stag Advent template, HBM UK, The Tower, Phoenix Square, Colchester, Essex, CO4 9HU.

2 Use the template to cut the stag’s head from brown or black felt, and pin to the linen rectangle, positioning it towards the upper middle of the fabric – ensure it is at least 12cm down from the top edge. Use an embroidery needle and thread to blanket stitch all around the outside of the silhouette, to secure it to the linen.

3 Cut several small circles and diamonds from scraps of colourful felt, and glue these onto the antlers of the stag to create baubles. Stick a handful of sequins onto each for extra decoration.

4 Make the pockets. Cut a 12cm x 38cm rectangle of linen, and fold in half lengthways. Pin, then stitch one short side and the remaining open long edge of each closed, leaving a 1cm seam allowance. Turn out through the remaining small side and press. Fold the raw edge in by 1cm and stitch closed. Repeat to create another.

5 Pin both pockets to the linen, positioning them centrally about 3cm beneath the stag. Machine top stitch around the side and bottom edges of each to hold. Divide each pocket up into 12, 3cm sections, then top stitch over the divides to create 24 pockets. Use a fabric marker to write the numbers on each.

6 Press the decorated linen, then place it right-sides together with the other linen rectangle and pin. Stitch around the edge, allowing a 1cm seam allowance, making sure to leave a 6cm gap in the seam along one side edge. Turn the wall-hanger out through the gap, then hand stitch it closed and press.
