Our new kitchen is modern and multi-functional

Clean, calm colours and a fresh layout transformed Sarah Coupland’s tired kitchen into a contemporary kitchen diner

The kitchen gets plenty of light, thanks to French doors opening onto the garden. Sarah chose a mid taupe wall colour to tone with the kitchen cupboards and work surfaces. The breakfast bar has become a favourite spot for the couple to relax and chat

Buying their first home together was a big step for Sarah Coupland and her partner, Liam Costello. ‘We chose this house partly because it didn’t need much work,’ says Sarah. ‘It had a new boiler, plenty of storage and although the kitchen was bland and a bit oldfashioned, we thought we could manage with it for quite a while.’ However, once they moved in, Sarah discovered the kitchen was in a worse state than she had realised. The units and worktops were worn, the grouting in the tiled floor was impossible to clean, and there was a big hole in the outside wall, where the previous owner’s tumble-dryer had been vented. The expense of moving had eaten into their savings, but after two months Sarah and Liam decided to invest what they could in a complete update. ‘It would have been nice to have had a bit more time to save up, but we realised it had to be done as soon as possible,’ says Sarah.

And if you’re thinking of getting a new sofa before your family and friends arrive for Christmas, then make sure you read our expert guide on p.36 for all the information and inspiration you need to pick your perfect settee. We also take a look at the latest ovens which are big on style and features, but kind to your pocket – ideal for cooking your Christmas dinner (p.48). If you’re thinking of moving home in the New Year, then turn to p.106 to find out how to discover where the latest property hotspots are in your area. Bonfire night is a great excuse to have a get-together before we all get too busy in the run-up to the festive season.
